In September at the Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of the America, held in Argentina, Minister Gloria Abraham announced the upcoming Global Fisheries Enforcement Training Workshop. The Costa Rican Minister of Agriculture and Livestock reiterated the importance of the GFETW, which is to be held February 2014, in San Jose, Costa Rica. Minister Abraham underscored the extent to which IUU fishing depletes fish stocks and therefore undermines the sustainability of coastal communities. She expressed to her colleagues that the international community must continue to work closely together to combat IUU fishing.
“MCS professionals from all over the globe should work closely together to combat IUU fishing. Together we will be more effective through exchanging information and experience and by mutually supporting each other’s efforts to combat IUU fishing where possible. The fourth GFETW in Costa Rica offers an excellent opportunity to renew our contacts, to build trust between MCS experts and to learn from experiences in other parts of the world. I hope to see you all at the fourth GFETW in San Jose.” -Cephas Ralph, Chairman of International MCS Network
